Frequently Asked Questions
Please send us your questions about obtaining resident investor status in Costa Rica.
Q. Where is the plantation located and how old are the trees?
A. The plantation is located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Guanacaste is considered the prime area in the country for growing quality teak
The trees are 14 -15 years of age now. Anticipated harvest will be in 5 -10 years.
Q. How many trees do I purchase?
A. The trees are planted three meters (10 feet) apart. Thus one hectare (2.47 acres) will have an average of 1100 trees. We say average because if the particular plot has inclines or declines the planting area will be larger thus slightly more trees. The maintenance process which takes place over the lifetime of the growing cycle requires heavy thinning. At harvest time there will be approximately 470-500 trees per hectare.
Q. Who maintains the trees that I purchase.
A. When you make your purchase you receive your hectare of land and trees plus the maintenance contract (spelled out in the sales contract) which indicates that the trees will be maintained by the owners of Hacienda Oro Verde S.A. to C.R. Forrestry Engineers (or higher) standards until harvest time.
Q. How much teak timber can I expect at harvest time?
A. We use a formula of fifteen cubic meters of stem fiber per year per hectare. Thus it is projected that there will be 300 cubic meters available at the end of a 20 year cycle.
Q. How do I know that the land that I purchase from the plantation is really mine?
A. When you have made your purchase a formal transfer is made at the National Land Registry. This transfer requires both the principals of Hacienda Oro Verde S.A. and the investor to sign the transfer documents. The new title is presented to the investor.
Q. Can I live on my property? Can I build a house on my property?
A. The property is yours. You can sell it at a future date or you could keep it in your name and your family's name for generations. The area is remote from the perspective of building a home but again, your property, your decision.
Q. What happens when (if) we decide to harvest?
A. You will be asked if you wish to participate in a general harvest of the plantation. If you wish to participate your trees will be harvested. At that time you have several choices. You will have the opportunity to participate in the next growing cycle or sell the land and timber. The aditional choice would be to keep the trees standing in anticipation of obtaining older, more valuable timber.
